In the beautiful turn of the century house in Nacka, Mersina and her family have created many new traditions together. How about the Friday disco every Friday, the annual girls’ trip or the dinner for two? – Think about what gave you and your family a happy moment and do it again. Then it becomes a nice tradition, says Mersina Karlsson.
In Mersina Karlsson’s home it’s not just cosy and stylish - every corner is well thought out. Here she lives with her husband and their kids August and Edward. The fantastic turn of the century villa has been renovated and refined with a big heart and lots of care. The result is a house you will fall in love with at first sight.
- For both me and my husband our home is our passion. We have constantly various building or garden projects on the go. I love interior decorating and my garden interest grows year by year, Mersina tells us.
Just like for us at Sagaform, traditions and moments to share are something that Mersina likes to create together with her family and friends.
– Traditions are all about creating togetherness, memories and something to long for. To me it doesn’t have to be the grand traditions like Christmas, new year and midsummer. I love the new traditions our own little family has created. As always on Fridays, mixing that luxurious drink (non-alcoholic for the kids, of course) and then having our Friday disco together before ending the day with a cosy family movie. To me the small traditions are the most important, says Mersina.

Have you inherited or passed on any tradition, for example from when you were little?

I have actually created most traditions in recent years, but I still have some Christmas decorations from childhood which are very special to me. They always appear even if they not the best-looking ones.

How important is it that everything is the same during a tradition?

I think it’s good to have a balance. There should be space for spontaneity within a tradition. You stick to what is successful while other parts perhaps can change a little over the years.

I like to use a nice tablecloth and napkins in cotton or linen. It feels more luxurious than using normal paper napkins. To choose plates we normally don’t use, I also think makes the dinner into something special.

Is there a tradition you have heard about you really would like to do together with your family or friends?

I was listening to a podcast recently where they were talking about a lovely tradition - to start the day, during the whole vacation, with a morning swim and a cup of coffee by the lake. It sounded totally wonderful. Perhaps something one should emulate?

An annual tradition at your house is the date night, tell us about it!

Me and Marcus love good food and after the kids were born it hasn’t been so easy to find time for dating at a restaurant. So, we have fixed a luxurious date at home instead. We buy something extra tasteful, like seafood, cheeses and cold cuts, or we cook something more advanced. It depends on what mood we’re in. To us this is a super cosy tradition. Maybe there’s something in the fact that we are really home-loving too.

How do you think when setting the table for a date night?

I like to use a nice tablecloth and napkins in cotton or linen. It feels more luxurious than using normal paper napkins. To choose plates we normally don’t use, I also think makes the dinner into something special. Like our green “Coffee and more” plates from Sagaform, they are stylish with something extra which makes the food look really tasty. Fresh flowers and lit candles are also a must for creating a lovely and cosy atmosphere!

Please give us your best tips on how to create a good tradition

Think about something that gave you and your family a happy moment and repeat that! Perhaps it’s the first fika-moment of spring in the garden which creates great joy. Or do the kids like to hunt for eggs during Easter? Create your own traditions and have moderate expectations.
